Bike Messengers' Compete in World Championships

Over 700 bike messengers from all over the world gathered in New York in July 2005 to compete in the 13th annual Cycle Messengers World Championship.

They competed in 3 days of sprints, skids, bunny-hops, track stands, courier-inspired mayhem, and raw displays of athleticism. In the main event - a simulated messenger's working day - riders raced through the financial and post-industrial buildings of Jersey City off Manhattan to pick up and deliver parcels at checkpoints.

Though couriers have long been fiercely antiestablishment - even though they are the lifeblood for many corporate businesses - bike messenger culture and athletics may be going mainstream as it attracts growing attention, both from the media and from sponsors. Could this be the next skateboarding?
